Calm, Gentle Approach to Supporting Infant Comfort
Understanding Baby Osteopathy
Osteopathic care for babies uses soft, soothing techniques that work with the body rather than against it.
Osteopathic care for babies and toddlers aims to provide gentle hands-on techniques to help release physical tension, address movement concerns, reduce discomfort, promote body symmetry and encourage optimal physical function. Rachel may also provide education and advice on play-based exercises or at-home movement activities to help maintain or develop physical skills.
Techniques used are light-touch and calming, designed to support mobility and encourage natural settling. Using no more pressure than dressing or holding your child. We do NOT use any ‘cracking’ techniques or sudden movements.
During your baby’s appointment, Rachel takes time to understand your concerns, observe your baby’s movements and explain what she finds. Feeding, changing, or comforting your baby during the appointment is always welcome. Parents are supported throughout the session, ensuring both baby and caregiver feel confident, informed and at ease.
How Osteopathy Supports Babies
Osteopathy considers how tension, movement patterns and comfort levels may influence feeding, sleeping and general behaviour. Treatment aims to support relaxation and ease areas of tension
Some parents seek osteopathic care when they notice patterns such as:
- Difficulty settling or frequent fussiness
- Tension through the neck or body
- Preference to turn head one way
- Restless sleeping patterns
- Discomfort during feeding
- General signs of stiffness or irritability
If you’re unsure if osteopathy is right for your baby we’re very happy to talk to you and answer any questions you may have
What to Expect in Your Baby’s Appointment
A baby’s session is slow, gentle and guided by comfort. Rachel begins by taking a detailed history, including birth details, movement preferences, milestones, development, feeding experiences and any concerns you may have. She observes how your baby moves, rests and responds, looking for areas that may need support.
Treatment is performed with your baby either lying on the table, in your arms or wherever they feel most settled. Gentle techniques are used to help ease tension and support balanced movement.
At RG Osteopathy, the aim is always to create a comfortable, calm environment where babies and toddler can relax and parents feel fully supported.
Feeding, changing, or comforting your baby during the appointment is always welcome.
A Whole-Body Approach to Assessment
We look at how different parts of the body work together by assessing:
- general movement and coordination
- postural variations as children grow
- joint mobility and soft tissue tension
- overall musculoskeletal (muscle, joint, connective tissue) balance
- head and neck mobility
- muscle tone and symmetry
- hip and limb movement
- feeding or latch-related positioning
- milestone-related movement patterns
Gentle, Subtle Hands-On Approach
Techniques used with babies and toddlers are light, slow and gentle, using no more pressure than holding or dressing your child. We do not use any ‘cracking’ techniques or sudden movements.
Treatment may include:
- gentle soft tissue techniques
- subtle cranial or indirect techniques
- age-appropriate stretching or movement-based techniques
- calm, reassuring hands-on contact
All techniques are selected with your baby’s comfort, age and individual needs in mind, and you are welcome to pause at any time for feeding, changing or cuddles.
Advice and Education
We may offer guidance on:
- play-based movement ideas
- tummy time variations
- practical settling or positioning suggestions
- age-appropriate activities to support physical development
Advice is always tailored to what is relevant, manageable and useful for your child and your family.
